There is an abundance of software for Windows that allows you to tweak and enhance your digital photos. What happens though if you want to edit photographs on the fly while you’re out and about? Get hold of Photos HQ for your Palm and you won’t go far wrong. The application is designed to improve the quality and definition of the pictures your take on your device’s camera.

Thanks to its rather nifty system of pixel replication, the software is able to actually increase the resolution of the camera. For instance, if your terminal has an SVGA camera, Photo HQ increases the number of pixels from 640×480 to 960×720. The process is very simple and the results are surprisingly impressive.

In addition, Photo HQ includes several levels of digital zoom, options for improving the focus, a ten second self-timer function and a helpful picture-in-picture thumbnail view.

Advanced editing features and effects are thin on the ground, but if you want to quickly bump up the resolution of your camera phone’s pictures, Photo HQ offers a pretty idiot-proof solution.

One of the most important skills for musicians of any kind is the ability to correctly identify intervals by ear. Ear training is therefore a substantial building block of any kind of music education. Typically practicing this skill happens during class or with a private tutor and takes some time. EarMan is a tool that can enhance proficiency in ear training and can aid greatly in the process of advancing in this difficult subject.

The program offers a way for “spot learning” where specific interval sets can be practiced in specific ranges. This can be used to focus on weaknesses. Every session is graded in once completed. In addition EarMan offers a complete curriculum that trains the user step by step from correctly identifying simple intervals in limited groups to the full range including compound intervals.

EarMan uses RoGame’s sound library and includes a Grand Piano library for playback on devices with Palm OS 5.0 and higher. Intervals a shown in grand staff notation to aid the learning process. Interval sets include complementary intervals. The interface for the application has been designed to be free from distractions so that one can fully concentrate on the sound.

Just because the Apple iPhone does something in a certain way, it doesn’t mean that it’s the perfect way of doing it and that everyone else should copy it. Hang on, actually it does. Treobble is the latest in a growing number of programs designed to replicate the iPhone’s intertia contact scrolling feature, this time for Treo devices, allowing you to peruse your address book simply by touching and sliding your finger up and down the screen.

It would be unfair to say that’s all that it does though, because there are plenty of other features that help you enhance your contacts book. For instance, you can view all data from a particular contact, initiate a call, send an SMS message or an email, all without having to use the pointer.

The scrolling feature works surprisingly well unless you have lots of contacts, in which case it can get quite jerky. It also lacks the ability to perform incremental searches of your address book, which can get a bit annoying.

Nevertheless, Treobble is probably the closest thing you’ll get to the iPhone’s cool contact-scrolling function without actually upgrading to the Apple device.

If you’re a creative sort of person then often you might get the urge to start doodling while you’re sat around. If there’s no pen and paper handy then you might want to consider installing a drawing application on your handheld device.

HandPainter is a simple piece of software that allows you to draw and design digital images on your Palm, and is a free, scaled-down version of HandPainter-PRO. Installation is a little fiddly than most programs as you need to install three separate files onto your device to get it running.

Once you’ve done this you’ll be presented with a blank canvas and a range of icons that represent tools such as sketch, paint, fill, spray and shapes. There are some extra icons at the top that let you perform tasks like clearing the page, undoing, and save/load.

It’s not a particularly professional looking interface - the icons are very blocky and the toolbar seems very squashed. Nevertheless, the tools on offer can be accessed pretty quickly once you figure out what they all do and are sufficient enough for creating rough doodles and sketches like you might create in MS Paint.

It’s hardly the prettiest paint program ever, but it’s good for satisfying your creative urges while you’re sat on the bus.
